Patti Stanger has made a living as the brutally honest Millionaire Matchmaker, but some say her latest verbal lashing went too far. On this week’s Watch What Happens Live with Bravo’s Andy Cohen, the reality star made these comments about gay singles and Jewish men.
Patti Stanger: “There is no curbing the gay, have you seen the Madison episode? I mean seriously. I have tried to curb you people.”
Andy Cohen: “I mean I am a gay and I’m down for the monogamy.”
Patti Stanger: (laughs)
Andy Cohen: “Do you not believe me?”
Andy Cohen: “Why — what, why? What do Jewish men do?”
Patti Stanger: “They lie.” (Video source: CelebTV)
Some say the matchmaker forgot to take her own advice and mind her manners. Here’s Gawker’s takeaway.
“Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger answered questions from viewers about dating. And by ‘answered questions,’ I mean ‘made dumb comments that reinforce stereotypes of gay men as effeminate, disease-carrying sluts who are incapable of monogamy.’”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, some viewers are taking their complaints a step further, calling for Bravo to give Stanger the axe and making #cancelstanger a trending topic on Twitter.
Bravo and Stanger responded by immediately releasing an apologetic statement to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Here’s what Stanger said:
“I am so sorry. I did not mean to offend anyone with my comments last night on Watch What Happens Live.”
But, Stanger might be doing more harm than good. She made an appearance on The Joy Behar Show to make an “apology” that’s not sitting well with some.
Joy Behar: “Now here’s when I think you went wrong: when you make it sound as if all gays are like that. If you said all blacks, all Chinese, all women, anything -- it would get you in trouble.”
Patti Stanger: “I apologize if GLAAD was offended. But I've been the first person for gay marriage in the box, to put it on the map, on television, where every network fought me. Queer as Folk wouldn't do it, and I was the one. And I'm still there in the trenches.”
But if Twitter’s any indication -- some aren’t willing to accept that apology. But Yahoo!’s Buzz Log suggests the blunt reality star is just doing what she does best...
“Web searches on the outspoken host soared. Over the past 24 hours, online lookups for ‘patti stanger’ jumped over 212%. Related lookups on ‘patti stanger show’ also spiked. She may not be making any friends, but she is making news.”
Stanger has yet to address her comment that "Jewish men lie."
