“Some popular children’s drugs are being pulled off store shelves because they may not meet quality standards. The voluntary recall covers dozens of over-the-counter children’s medicines including children’s versions of Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl.” (CNN)
A division of Johnson & Johnson is recalling more than 40 medicines. The voluntary recall affects stores throughout the United States and its territories, as well as nine other countries.
We’re looking at perspectives from CNN, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and WTNH.
Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit is pulling the medicine because of manufacturing problems at a Pennsylvania plant. The Washington Post has McNeil’s statement about the manufacturing deficiencies.
“Some of the products included in the recall may contain a higher concentration of active ingredient than is specified; others contain inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements; and others may contain tiny particles."
The plant has suspended operations for the time being. This is the third recall by Johnson & Johnson since 2008. A writer for The Wall Street Journal says these recalls are starting to draw attention.
“…recently U.S. regulators have criticized J & J's handling of product-quality issues, due to an ever-widening series of recalls of over-the-counter medicines that picked up steam late last year.”
McNeil did receive consumer complaints related to the recalled medicines. But Connecticut’s ABC affiliate says the medications problems haven’t made a severe impact on customers.
“The medications apparently do not meet quality standards. None, though, have caused any adverse effects. But consumers are advised not to give the medications to their children.”
Parents can still use generic versions of the recalled medicine. The FDA also warns against using adult medications on infants and children.
So, after this third recall in as many years, are you beginning to have doubts about J & J products? Or do you still trust the Tylenol and Motrin brands?
