Fox News debuts its newest contributor Tuesday night, and she might look a little familiar. Sarah Palin has signed multi-year contract with Fox News, leaving pundits and politicos alike to ask—what, if anything, does this signal about her political future?
We’re looking at perspectives from CBS News, Fox News, Politico, CNN, and MSNBC.
After Palin’s failed 2008 vice presidential run, CNN political contributor Paul Begala suggests her run on Fox News is bad news for Democrats.
PAUL BEGALA: “But I do think maybe it suggests, sadly for Democrats, she might not be running. Unfortunately, there’s just going to be one more ignorant right-winger at FOX News, that’s sort of a redundancy, but I’d rather she run because I think Democrats know, pretty confident they can defeat Sarah Palin.”
On CBS News, Republican strategist Leslie Sanchez disagrees. She reminds host Harry Smith this kind of media exposure has worked for other politicians.
LESLIE SANCHEZ: “I think she’s actually taking a page out of the Ronald Reagan playbook. It’s something he did in 1976 to 1980. He had a radio show. She'll have tremendous support, a lot of primary Republican voters watch Fox News, and she’s going to be able to hopefully put together some cogent ideas on domestic policy issues, foreign policy. It’s a good platform and could lead her down the road to 2012.”
FOX News anchor Bill O’Reilly says that Palin’s exposure on FOX News will make her a stronger political player.
O’REILLY: “With her increased visibility we can expect even more media attacks on Sarah Palin, but in my opinion, the loathing towards her by the press has made her much stronger in the eyes of the public. ... At this point I’m ready to pronounce Sarah Palin a Teflon politician. No matter how they try to destroy her, it doesn't stick."
Politico suggests whether politician or pundit, Palin has a good strategy going for her.
“It’s a media strategy that allows a certain measure of control, too, considering that political reporters and cable news hosts will cover any Facebook note … while not getting the opportunity [to] ask a follow-up. In addition, her best-selling memoir, 'Going Rogue' … helps put the best spin on the last time she ran for office.”
Finally, MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” couldn’t help poking fun at the former Alaska governor’s latest move.
“Here’s how it works. You give interviews to the media so you can criticize the media, so you can give interviews to the media, so you can criticize the media, so you can give interviews to the media, so you can criticize the media until you finally criticize the media so much you wind up as the media. And then, everybody wins.”
So does Sarah Palin’s Fox News contract signal anything about a future run for office? Will you be watching for her appearances on the cable network?
