A potentially dangerous confrontation between two nuclear rivals was avoided Sunday. An Indian Army helicopter flew into Pakistani airspace, but within five hours the issue was resolved. NDTV has the story.

“In fact India has  thanked Pakistan four army men on board Cheetah helicopter arrested by Pakistan today after they strayed into Pakistan airspace inadvertently.  After hectic phone calls between two sides the issue was resolved and the soldiers are now back in India, in Kargil actually. “

Indian military says bad weather in the area is to blame, but Asian Tribune reports this isn’t the first time India’s been in this position.

“Indian air craft are in the habit of carrying out air space violations of neighbouring countries. …  In 2008 Indian aircraft made a deliberate attempt when two Indian jet entered into Pakistani space with a view to carry out strikes on Pakistani sensitive installations but flown back on timely response of Pakistani Air Force.”

And The Wall Street Journal reports, this is a rare case of cooperation between the two wary neighbors.

“The incident was a test of recent efforts by India and Pakistan to improve relations through a fragile peace process. The cautious initial responses by both sides, and quick resolution of the affair, showed both sides were eager to play down any tensions.”

A spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry echoes those thoughts. He told Northern Voices Online....

“We are relieved that our officers and helicopter are back in India. We greatly appreciate the manner in which Pakistan worked with us in resolving the matter,”

And Daily News and Analysis says there was no reason to panic in the first place.

“There is no war or war-like situation between the two sides. The helicopter was also not meant for any kind of reconnaissance mission.”

The Daily News and Analysis also adds Pakistani choppers have also strayed over the Line of Control several times in  the 2005 earthquake relief operations. But because it was for humanitarian efforts, it was widely ignored.
