Basically, this whole thing was stacked in favor of AIG from the beginning, contractual obligations mean that if AIG refused to pay the bonuses they would have to buy out the execs in question which would make the bailout useless, and put even more tax payer money in theses guys pockets. So the end result, AIG keeps the money, the bad guys get there bonuses and in long run we will probably have to give AIG more money. This type of bonus payment should have been banned by the initial deal, they should have never gotten the money if they were going to still pay bonuses, another gift from the Bush administration that has left President Obama with egg on his face.

I'm amazed that this is up for debate, this would not fly in any company, just because AIG is powerful? well how smart were those execs to los all that money, and to be rewarded for it? where can I get a job that I'm rewarded for Screwing up? what an american ebarassment.

The United States can't take the money back, the fact of the matter is, is that those bonuses are part of previously existing contracts and that money is technically owed to whoever is getting it if AIG has the money to give. The blame should go on the Obama administration for stepping in and giving them that money in the first place.
