After reportedly surviving a bomb blast, Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been released from a Saudi hospital and is recuperating in Riyadh.
So the question is – will he return to Yemen?
The director of Institute of Gulf Affairs in Washington tells PressTV – he most certainly will.
“The Saleh return will send a message to the revolutionaries that they have no options but to surrender. And might deal a severe blow to the revolution because having Abdullah Saleh almost dying and coming back, this will show his ferocity and survival skill.”
Euronews reports Yemeni protest continued after Saleh’s exit, but were nowhere close to as violent as before his injury.
“The situation in Yemen itself is calmer now although demonstration calling for Saleh to step down continue. There are sporadic clashes between Saleh supporters and Ahmar family faction. And one person was killed when pro-Saleh forces tried to disperse an anti-Saleh rally.”
According to Al Jazeera, the protestors have been calling for Saleh resignation since January and are showing no sign of giving up. In fact – they are going on the offensive.
“The opposition … has called for the creation of an interim council, to prevent Saleh’s return.”
Voice of America adds the U.S. has also told Saleh to step down -- but to no avail.
“The United States has urged Mr. Saleh to agree to a plan drafted by the Gulf Cooperation Council, under which he would hand power to a deputy within 30 days in return for immunity from prosecution. The Yemeni president has repeatedly refused to sign the plan.”
Finally, The Guardian adds whether or not people want him in power, Saleh needs to return – for Yemen’s sake.
“Saleh’s absence has only added to the turmoil in Yemen, where more than six months of mass protests calling for the removal of the president have battered the economy and heightened security fears.”
The BBC reports some 350 people had been killed in demonstrations before Saleh was injured.
