The owner of a McDonald's in Canton, Ohio, is lovin’ the GOP--but he might be heading for legal trouble after including a politically-charged handbill in employee paychecks, urging them to vote for Republicans.
WKYC has the story.
“This letter and campaign flier were attached to employee paychecks. It encourages workers to vote for ‘the right people,’ presumably the three Republican candidates listed at the bottom of the page. It suggests voting for the ‘wrong people’ would impact their wages.”
The letter, written by franchise owner Paul Siegfried, was forwarded to a local attorney by an anonymous employee and the story took off from there. Politico posted a statement from McDonald’s regional office in Ohio condemning the letter:
"The content of this material is not reflective of McDonalds' position. ... We remain bipartisan on these matters.”
But a writer for Huliq says that isn’t enough.
“The problem with [the] statement is that it overlooks the threat of a hit to employees pocketbooks if they fail to help elect the ‘right people’. It also misses the larger point that there are laws on the subject that look at Siegfried's electioneering as voter intimidation.”
And Crooks and Liars says, it may not be McDonald’s official position to support the GOP--but it does make sense. (Video: CBS)
“Of course, McDonald's has a vested interest in repealing the Affordable Care Act. ... Their 'minimed' health plan won't qualify as an acceptable plan under the expanded definition of basic benefits.”
The McD’s manager did issue an apology, saying quote “distributing this communication was an error of judgement.”
