Yes, we all know that a rotting fish isn’t the most pleasant smell — but add 40 thousand pounds to that fish and you’ve got a whale of a stink.

A 41-foot-long Fin Whale has been decaying on a remote beach in Malibu for nearly a week.

Here's NBC

“Wildlife officials believe the 3-year-old whale was hit by a ship.
And had a 6 by 4 foot gash in the muscle beneath its blubber and a broken spine. ‘It would have to be a pretty serious impact in order to break bones like that. Even though they are fast swimmers, shipping traffic often moves faster than they can get out of the way.’”

WFTS explains the whale hasn’t been removed yet because it’s a private beach so the line of who is responsible for the animal is blurry.

“The city assumed the county would remove it but the county insisted the beach is private— not their responsibility.  The issues over jurisdiction delayed movement of the whale for so long it started to decompose….”

The whale is now so badly decomposed that if officials attempt to tow it out to sea, they fear it would simply tear apart. There are also talks about towing it out in pieces — but that decision wouldn’t come until December 10th. If all the plans fall through, the decomposing whale will be left in nature’s hands.

According the Associated Press, the beach is home to celebrities like Barbra Streisand and Bob Dylan. The stench is so strong residents understandably want the whale gone like, yesterday.
