The three month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement got off to a rough start Saturday - as nearly 50 protesters were arrested in New York City. Fox News has the story.
“More than 50 people were reportedly arrested after trying to climb over a chain link fence, around a church parking lot where they apparently wanted to build a new campground. After being turned away some protesters tried again, they were turned away again, police got involved. You see the aftermath.”
According to a statement from protesters, Saturday’s action was part of a call to “reoccupy” after evictions of occupations across the nation. New York’s NY1 spoke with a protester who details his determination.
“I think that in order to be able to exercise our first amendment freedom of assembly, we have to actually do it. And if that means that we can't obtain the permits necessary to do so, then we need to just do it anyway.”
So they did it anyway - and those that did were arrested - CNN has that.
“The church had warned demonstrators that their space was off limits. The protesters were arrested for trespassing."
But KOMU reports - the majority of those protesting were doing so without breaking the law.
“They wanted to set up camp in the private lot because its near the World Trade Center site. About 1,000 protesters gathered across the street in a city park but did not interfere with police.”
After three months of protests - arrests - and more protests - an opinion writer for the New York Daily News says enough is enough - it needs to end.
“...it’s time for a no-nonsense, corporate-style first-quarter report. What has the movement accomplished? Zip, unless you count muddying a message that wasn’t clear in the first place — and alienating large swaths of the public in the process. ... They’ve lost the attention of the bulk of Americans — even young people who are their supposed base. That’s because Occupy just makes no sense.”
