It’s a turkey day tragedy. A cranberry sauce catastrophe. A heaping helping of criticism of the president, for this:
“So today, I’m thankful to serve as your President and Commander-and-Chief. I’m thankful that my daughters get to grow up in this great country of ours. And I’m thankful for the chance to do my part, as together, we make tomorrow better than today.”
That -- from the president’s annual Thanksgiving Day speech. In it, he thanked US troops serving overseas, and paid tribute to volunteers serving in soup kitchens.
Almost immediately, KPNX reports, his critics noted -- something was missing...
“Apparently President Obama did not thank or mention God in his speech -- instead calling the very first thanksgiving a ‘celebration of community.’”
The ominous omission wasn’t lost on Fox Radio’s Todd Starnes, who writes...
“For many Americans, though, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on how blessed and thankful they are. … But nowhere in the 11-paragraph address does he mention the Almighty.”
And conservative columnist Ben Schapiro took it further, in a tweet calling the president a... “Militant atheist. To whom does he think we are giving thanks?”
But others are asking -- really?? Gawker’s headline reads...
“Obama’s ‘God’-less Remarks Ruined Wingnut Thanksgiving.”
And on Twitter, The Washington Post’s Melinda Henneberger points out -- he also didn’t mention turkey in the speech. She asks, “Does that make him a vegetarian?”
Not to mention -- the president has mentioned God in past speeches.
PRESIDENT OBAMA, 2010: “...we’ll spend some time taking stock of what we’re thankful for: the God-given bounty of America, and the blessings of one another.”
And here...
PRESIDENT OBAMA, 2009: “Thank you, God bless you, and from my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.”
This Thanksgiving, President Obama also called ten servicemembers stationed overseas to wish them a happy holiday.
