President Obama swung by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Thursday, and even before the interview aired one quote regarding the attack in Libya was already making headlines.

“...in response to a question by Stewart ... President Obama said quote ‘If four Americans get killed, it is not optimal.’” (Video via Fox News)

The quote was released by the White House press pool and drew immediate criticism. Conservatives felt Obama was belittling the death of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others who died in an attack on the Libyan consulate in September.

Writing at Fox News Insider, Greta Van Susteren asks: “is THAT how the President describes it, ‘not optimal?’”

Twitter users created the “not optimal” hashtag, pointing out aspects of Obama’s presidency they feel are also “not optimal.”

Liberal sources defended Obama, saying the word “optimal” was part of Stewart’s question, and that’s why Obama used it. Here’s the full clip.

“I would say even you would admit it was not the optimal response, at least to the American people, as far as us all being on the same page.”
“Here’s what I’ll say. If four Americans get killed it’s not optimal.”

A blogger for Media Matters writes: “Conservative media have repeatedly taken Obama out of context, treating excerpts of comments as if they were complete statements in a manner that often transforms their meaning.”

But conservatives fired back again, saying the full context of the quote doesn’t change a thing.

A writer for Breitbart.com says: “it’s far worse in context. Stewart said that the White House response was ‘not the optimal response.’ Obama responded not by tackling the White House response, but by calling the murders ‘not optimal.’”

And a writer for the Telegraph adds: “It’s an incredibly cold, robotic and insensitive way to describe a human tragedy.”

The Romney campaign aired an anti-Obama ad during the show and is expected to pounce on the “not optimal” quote.
