Was there any other place you’d expect Terelle Pryor to land?
The Oakland Raiders selected ex-Ohio State quarterback Terelle Pryor in the third round of Monday’s Supplemental Draft. Pryor is expected to sign a four-year contract worth over two million dollars. A writer for Sports Illustrated believes Pryor and the Raiders are a perfect pairing.
“…you can't say the marriage of the Raiders and Pryor doesn't make sense. It almost had to happen. He's a big, fast and supremely gifted athlete, and he went to the one franchise that above all others prioritizes size, speed and athleticism. In retrospect, Pryor was destined to be a Raider.”
Already under a five game suspension due to NCAA infractions upheld by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Pryor could have a tough time seeing the field in 2011 as a quarterback with four signal callers already on the roster.
All problems aside, one Fox Sports Ohio blogger said the combination was too predictable, and was a little disappointed after all the hype, saying...
“…this whole Pryor-to-Oakland thing was too easy to call. The buildup was juicy, and agent Drew Rosenhaus poured on the hype by inviting the eyes of the NFL and a whole bunch of TV cameras to watch Pryor workout near his hometown last weekend. The ending? Anti-climactic. Made for Twitter, not for TV. Oakland? Yawn. Oakland? Of course.”
So the sports world saw this one coming. But ESPN’s Todd McShay notes- there are some drawbacks. By selecting Pryor with the 18th pick of the third round, the Raiders now have one less draft pick in 2012, making their options for next year pretty slim.
“When you look at it they don’t have a second round pick, a third round pick, or a fourth round pick in 2012. And for that they’ve got a couple of rookies, they’ve got Terelle Pryor, and they also have Jason Campbell at the quarterback position. And so they’ve given up a lot. They’re not helping themselves in the future and my big question is what is Terelle Pryor gonna do for this football team?”
There are questions about how Pryor’s skills will translate to the NFL. Not known as a pure passer, the Raiders may push Pryor to a new position. Known for his speed, the former Buckeye clocked a time of 4.36 in the 40-yard dash during Saturday’s Pro Day.
One Athlon sports blogger says, with all this uncertainty, Raiders owner Al Davis reached too high by using a third round draft pick on the troubled quarterback.
“Terrelle Pryor is a giant work in progress. His accuracy has been described as "horrendous" and yet Big Al gave up a third round pick for him...You'd think someone who drafted Jamarcus Russell would've learned. Draft you once, shame on you. Draft you twice, well, shame on you again.”
