The 2012 presidential election’s still more than a year away, but politicos are already speculating a new Democratic front runner for 2016.
“New York made a powerful statement. Not just for the people of New York, but the people all across this nation.”
Andrew Cuomo is a name to know after a successful push for marriage equality in his home state. Politico’s Edward Isaac-Dovere and Maggie Haberman write- Cuomo’s heavily watched legalization of same-sex marriage has the governor well-positioned for a future run.
“With an accomplished first year in office and a family name that remains golden for older Democratic primary voters, he’ll now likely receive an endless list of invitations for speeches and Jefferson-Jackson dinners across the country.”
The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza points out- talk of Cuomo's move to the national stage is nothing new. As the son of a former three-term governor who flirted with his own presidential vid, Cuomo's used to the spotlight.
“Those political bloodlines have long had Cuomo the younger on the national radar of Democratic political operatives.”
But a blogger for the Daily Beast suggests- Cuomo may not fall in line with his party as well as Democratic leaders would hope.
“While he is... progressive on social issues, Andrew Cuomo sucks up to money just about as energetically as his Republican opposition. His impressive leadership on gay marriage—where he put money to work for social liberal causes—has been matched by an equally intensive commitment to ensuring that the wealthy are not asked to make any special contributions to what used to be called ‘the public good.’”
According to the Washington Post, a few other Democrats’ names have been floating around as well. Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Virginia Senator Mark Warner and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand are also early favorites for the 2016 race.
