A number of NFL and NBA athletes were at a New York City nightclub when a shooting took place. Turns out Plaxico Burress wasn’t there. ESPN gets us up to date on the latest trouble in the Big Apple.
“A gunman opened fire at a Manhattan nightclub early Tuesday morning, killing a 44 year old man and wounding two people, while up to five members of the New York Giants and a number of other prominent athletes were nearby.”
According to more recent reports, guys at the club allegedly included Giants wide receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, and NBA players John Wall, Kemba Walker, and Russell Westbrook. A New York Daily News writer has a simple message for the players.
“No more clubbing. It’s good advice for all of them, these stars who walk and play among us. Sure, a few good things can happen after 1 a.m. A fellow might meet the love of his life ...Then again, he might shoot himself in the leg.”
That of course referring to Burress’ “mishap.” New York Daily News’ Ralph Vacchiano (Vahk-iahno) tells NFL.com that another club shooting is the last kind of distraction the Giants need.
“It was an incident that brought back a lot of bad memories for the Giants, flashing them back to November 2008, when receiver Plaxico Burress was in a New York City nightclub.”
But was it really just a matter of wrong place, wrong time? CBS Sports Royce Young thinks so.
“They were just there when some psycho came storming in firing off shots. Which is extremely scary.”
And one blogger at Bloguin says the event could have brought a whole lot more finger pointing in the NBA if one of those players had gotten hurt.
“Not only would that have been a tragedy, but it would have brought this entire labor mess to a horrible new level because it wouldn’t have taken long for someone to say “if we had only reached an agreement sooner, these guys wouldn’t have been in that club.”
The Giants players will not be punished, however wide receiver Hakeem Nicks and NBA player Kemba Walker deny ever being at the club. Police are still searching for the suspected gunman.
