Psychiatrists have found that Anders Breivik, the man responsible for killing 69 people at a youth camp in Norway in July, is paranoid schizophrenic. If the court upholds this finding, the BBC reports, he will be confined to psychiatric care rather than prison.
"One, the observed person was psychotic when the alleged offenses were committed. Two, the observed person was psychotic during observation."
Breivik also bombed government buildings, killing an additional eight people. Psychiatrists say his acts were guided by delusions. MSNBC says,
“Breivik, 32, denies criminal guilt, saying he's a commander of a Norwegian resistance movement opposed to multiculturalism. Investigators have found no sign of such a movement and say Breivik most likely plotted and carried out the attacks on his own.”
The BBC spoke to Breivik’s defense lawyer.
"He knows that he’s done something dreadful. He knows that he’s been looked upon as a demon. But he explains everything, and says it’s necessary."
A recording was recently released of Breivik’s phone call to police from Utoya, where he shot and killed teenagers. The Guardian translated.
BREIVIK: Yes, hello. My name is Commander Anders Behring Breivik, from the Norwegian anti-communist resistance movement.
POLICE: Yes?
BREIVIK: I’m currently on Utoya and I want to surrender.
Police didn’t reach the island for almost an hour. In a second call made 20 minutes later, Breivik said his mission was complete and claimed to be a member of the Knights Templar.
