Nokia on Wednesday debuted the Lumia 710 and 800, a pair of new smartphones it hopes will help grab some market share back from its challengers.

The new phones have industry-standard features like touchscreens and cameras, and sport funky colors and slim industrial designs-- but looks aren’t the only thing going for them.

Wired reports the phones have dropped Nokia’s flagging MeeGo operating system. Nokia partnered with Microsoft for the new devices.

“..the Lumia 800 runs Mango, the latest version of Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS — an OS that Nokia hopes will save its smartphone platform from a slow-burn into irrelevance.”

CNET got some hands-on time with the 710, and reports a familiar experience.

“This is the more entry-level of the two devices, compared to the Nokia Lumia 800, and it’s very typical-looking of a smartphone.... It is a typical Windows phone, so it’s simple and easy to use.”

The specs are modest, compared to current flagships. The Lumia 800 runs on one core, and half a gigabyte of RAM. But Gizmodo says that’s no reason to dismiss these phones.

“Windows Phone represents something refreshing in tech: It's a disengagement from the specs and apps race. Yes, it needs to be competitive in those areas ... but it's more overtly about user experience than how its phones stack up on a spreadsheet.”

And to get that experience, the New York Times reports Nokia has tweaked its user interface to be as intuitive as possible.

“With Lumia, Nokia aims to beat Apple and Google by designing handsets that are easier to use than the two best-selling smartphones, the Apple iPhone 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S II, which runs Google’s Android software.”

Consumers here in the U.S. will have to wait until next year to try out a Lumia. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop tells Bloomberg the company has work to do before the phones arrive in 2012.

“What we’ve done deliberately is we’ve sequenced the rollouts, recognizing that we have to ramp up new factory capacity, we have to establish and build relationships with operators all around the world, and we have to invest in certain leading technologies like LTE, which are very important in certain markets, like the United States.”
 
Lumia phones will be headed to six countries in Europe this November.
