It was supposed to be secret -- but pictures of a new Nokia phone have been leaked.
It’s codenamed Sea Rau and it could represent Nokia’s first successful attempt at a competitive smartphone.
Although the new phone looks almost identical to Nokia’s N9, PC World explains the big difference.
“... while the N9 is based on Nokia's MeeGo operating system -- a platform that Nokia will treat as a
‘learning experience’ -- Sea Ray represents Nokia's future, as the company adopts Windows Phone for its principal smartphone strategy.”
The Sea Ray is assumed to have similar specs to the N9 including an 8 mega-pixel camera, 3.9 inch display, and plenty of power to run all of Microsoft’s business apps. (ZDNet)
Hungarian website Technet was the first to post the video of CEO Stephen Elop showing off the phone to what he hoped was a camera free audience.
“This is something that is super confidential and we do not want to see out on the blogosphere wherever it is, but we think it is important for all of you to see how this innovation lives on and how well we as a company are executing.”
And the buzz is coming at a good time for Nokia. Earlier this year, Nokia fell from the largest phone maker in the world to the third largest behind Samsung and Apple. CEO Stephen Elop says...
“What you should be feeling is that the capabilities of the mighty Nokia are shifting around and people are saying, ‘look at that.’ And ultimately there are a few competitors of ours in California that we would very much like to notice as well.”
But Phonedog’s Evan Sellek is less than impressed.
“As usual, Nokia’s high-end device is a marriage of plenty of high-end hardware... But I’ll just come right out and say it: I was expecting more from Nokia. If the N9 hadn’t been announced, then this wouldn’t even be an issue. ... Yet, now all I can think is that the first Windows Phone device from Nokia is really just an N9 with different software inside.”
Elop hopes to get back on top with this newest smartphone. The Sea Ray is expected to be officially released later this year.
