The explorer who discovered the wreckage of the Titanic now says he’s found proof of an ancient flood -- the flood that might have inspired stories like Gilgamesh and Noah’s Ark. ABC has more on Robert Ballard’s claims.

“It’s not a crazy thing to think that the flood stories from various cultures, including ours, are based upon true cataclysmic events.”

The search is based on a controversial theory suggesting the Black Sea used to be a freshwater lake. The Guardian explains.

[The theory is that] “the rising Mediterranean Sea pushed a channel through what is now the Bosphorus, submerging the original shoreline of the Black Sea in a deluge flowing at about 200 times the volume of Niagara Falls and extending out for 100,000 square miles.”

Ballard says he’s found proof of the flood -- an ancient shoreline found about 400 feet below the surface.

“He carbon dated shells at the shoreline, and said that he believes they have established a timeline of the event, which he believes happened around 5,000 BC.”

Ballard will continue his research hoping to find evidence of the settlements that would have been washed away.
