Nigeria Marketplace Bombings Kill At Least 50

Two explosions in a market in northeast Nigeria have left at least 50 dead, according to the Red Cross.

“A bombing in the city of Maiduguri in Northeastern Nigeria … the explosion occurred in the region where the armed group Boko Haram has been fighting government forces.” (Via Al Jazeera)

“The first blast struck a crowded market near the city's airport while the second explosion occurred as people were gathering to help the victims.” (Via the BBC)

“Nearby residents say many buildings have been reduced to rubble.” (Via CNN)

Voice of America reports the bombs exploded near a crowded cinema showing a soccer match.

While no one has taken responsibility for the attack, authorities reportedly suspect Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which claims Maiduguri as its original base of operations. 

The group’s recent activities have made headlines. An attack on a boarding school killed 29 last week, in adjacent Yobe State in Nigeria’s northeast. (Via NBC)

And last month, local officials say Boko Haram militants stormed several villages in Maiduguri’s Borno state, shooting more than 100 people and torching houses. (Via Channel 4)

The attacks come as the administration of Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan pushes to contain the insurgency. Jonathan has promised the fight against Boko Haram, quote, “will improve.” (Via the BBC)
