This is Newsy Now and here are the headlines you need to know.

First up -- a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska early Friday. A tsunami warning is in effect on some significant coastal parts of the state. CNN explains the danger.

“Right now we do have a tsunami warning in effect and that includes the coast area of Alaska and its an area about 80 miles east of Dutch Harbor... for anyone who watches ‘The Deadilest Catch’ Dutch Harbor is the starting point and these are fishing communities... its vicious waters, these are hardy people to start with but an earthquake is devastating.”

In U.S. news -- 12 big banks should expect a heavy knock on their door after the federal government files its lawsuit against what it’s calling misleading mortgages. The panel on Morning Joe explains who’s missing from the hitlist.

MIKA: “The agency that oversees Fannie and Freddie, taking over 12 banks. Today The New York Times, the banks misrepresenting the mortgage security of the bubble.”
JOE: “Wait. Fannie and Freddie is doing this? You put up private banks all you want to. We have been listing to this. This is such a scam for the past three years that anybody has had a target on their back expect for Fannie and Freddie.”

Still in the U.S. -- a California judge declared a mistrial in the case of a teen accused of killing a gay classmate. Jurors could not reach a verdict on Thursday, KABC explains where they were hung up.

“Prosectuors argued McInerney’s white supremacist ideology motivated him to kill King because he was gay. The defense claimed that unwanted sexual advacnes by King toward McInerney and an abusive childhood caused McInerney to kill King in a fit of rage... The nine woman three man panel said they took a series of votes the last one with seven in favor of voluntary manslaughter and five jurors supporting either first degree or second degree murder.”

In world news -- Turkey cuts all military ties to Israel and expels its ambassador after leaking a UN report. The document spilled the details on the raid of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in 2010. Fox News has more.

“Israeli soldiers killed nine people after boarding a Turkish ship stock with aid and bound for Gaza. This morning the UN said the assault was justified and that Israel was just trying to enforce its naval blockade of area. Turkish officials infuriated by the report and say they do not and will not recognize the legality of that blockade.”

Finally in sports -- fans of Jimmy Clausen will have to wait -- the Carolina Panthers have decided to start rookie QB Cam Newton for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. ESPN examines the Heisman winner’s gridiron potential.

“He has flashed at times but hasn't seemed to have improved. They want to go to Cam Newton and have set it up to go to Cam Newton and that's the plan, but he still has to go out and make plays right now -- the schedule’s tough.”
