This is Newsy Now, and here are your latest headlines. The US House has rebuked President Obama on his handling of Libya -- but it also failed to pass a vote that would have restricted further funding of the effort. Sound like a contradiction? ABC’s David Kurley likens the vote to a turf war.
“This really is a political battle over power. Presidential power over Congressional power. And depending on whether a Democrat or a Republican has been in the White House, Mr. Obama and the Speaker, Mr. Boehner have taken completely different positions.”
In U.S. news---policy makers are projecting an economic slowdown. This comes after the U.S. economy actually expanded at a first quarter 1.9% pace. Larger-than-estimated drops in spending by state and local governments are partly to blame for a drop in GDP. Here’s CNBC’s Rick Santelli.
“We just assume now they’re not going to move rates. We almost don’t even talk about it. Keeping rates too low too long is not a victimless crime. Think about these senior citizens out there.”
Along with a possible slowdown---Ben Bernanke’s approval--falls to a two-year low. According to Bloomberg--the Fed Chairman’s viewed “positively” by 30% of people polled. 26% view him unfavorably. Here’s Bloomberg.
“People are blaming Ben Bernanke for the economy growing slowly. Most people are ambivalent. 24 people in the survey said they are not sure what to make of Bernanke. But 30% find him favorable. That’s the lowest since Bloomberg began polling people.”
In world news---Palestine could ease its stance on settlement construction. It had wanted Isreal to stop building new settlements before they would negotiate. Now--it’s willing to let up on that--but only if Israel recognizes pre-1967 borders. Fox News interviewed the Israeli Ambassador to the U.S.
“They had to know that the Palestinian authority could not make a pact with Hamas, a terrorist organization that calls for Israel's destruction and the annihilation of the Jewish people worldwide.”
Finally in tech news---the first ever Nokia Windows phone---gets leaked. Turns out it was actually Nokia’s Chief Executive who was showing off the phone. Stephen Elop told a room full of employees not to take any pictures of the new phone---but somebody wasn’t listening.
“So the question of course is...What is it? Well, what this is is a product code-named “Sea-Ray”---and it is Nokia’s first Windows phone device...(applause)."
Looks like Elop might need to keep a closer eye on some of his employees. Stay with Newsy for all your news throughout the day. For Newsy Now I’m Jim Flink---hi-lighitng the top headlines---making you smarter---faster.
