In U.S. news -- President Barack Obama addressed the nation Wednesday night, laying out his plan for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan. Here’s euronews.
REPORTER: “Barack Obama has outlined his plans to start bringing US combat troops home from Afghanistan after a decade of war. In a televised address the president announced a more rapid reduction than military commanders had advised.”
OBAMA: "Starting next month we will be able to remove 10,000 of our troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year. And we will bring home a total of 33,000 troops by next summer - fully recovering the surge I announced at West Point. ... By 2014 this process of transition will be complete and the Afghan people will be responsible for their own security.” (Euronews)
Still in the U.S. -- 2010 census data shows Caucasian newborns are no longer in the majority.
“And surprising new census numbers show Caucasian babies are now the minority in the
United States for the first time ever! Government officials say more nonwhite babies were born last year than white babies.” (Fox News)
“The strongest evidence yet that minorities will become the majority here by mid century.” (ABC)
In world news -- the Syrian military pushes its troops to the border of Turkey as thousands of refugees flee the country.
“What we have seen, lines of Syrian soldiers, clearly armed with rifles marching along the hilltops. We’ve seen armored personnel carriers, up to 13 of them, driving around the border area on the hill behind me. … All of this quite unprecedented - because the convention had been the Syrian army would not move into full view of the Turkish border - that’s been the kind of gentleman's agreement between the two countries.” (Al Jazeera)
In tech news -- there might not be a sequel to the Social Network after the real Winklevoss twins dropped their appeal of the Facebook settlement.
“Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss who claimed that Mark Zuckerberg stole their idea have decided discontinue efforts to overturn -- give me $65 million and I might have said thank you. You don't want to blow it going to the Supreme Court, do you? It was reached in 2008. The heirs later claimed it was fraudulent because Facebook hid financial information from them. They are a couple of strapping crew guys. Winklevoss did not do well.”
And in entertainment -- after a week of suspense JK Rowling unveils her new website “Pottermore.” What is it? Sorry fans-- not a sequel -- it’s the Harry Potter series as ebooks.
“Big news if you are a Harry Potter fan. For the first time, author JK Rowling is going to sell her books in digital format. They’ll be available in an online bookstore Pottermore.com starting in October. The Pottermore site will open on July 31st -- Harry Potter's birthday. It will have lots of new info that Rowling says she’s been hoarding for years.”
