In U.S. news -- the final launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis will mark the end of an era for the NASA program. And -- it came with its customary delayed launch. CNN reports bad weather pushed back the original launch time.
“Finally, the last time I'm told we really need to watch is the nine-minute mark on the countdown
clock. The final hold. It lasts for about half an hour and when the crews get in there and ultimately decide to go, no-go decision. That is the latest in terms of the launch, we’re all still waiting for it.”
Still in the U.S. -- Judge Belvin Perry ordered Casey Anthony’s released date to be moved to next Sunday, but he will not release any names of the 12 jurors in the trial. Fox News reports there is concern for their safety based on the public’s strong reaction.
LINE: “...a lot of people have very strong feelings about this case especially in Florida. There's a restaurant there, a chili place, Skyline Chili in Clearwater that put up a sign that says they don't want the jurors there so they've made their feelings clear.”
DOOCY: “There's a story out there that apparently the judge is not going to release the names of the jurors until next week, until things die down. He thinks things will die down next week.” KILMEADE: “Couple of viewers weighed in on the jurors. Keith from florida says don't shun the jurors, they did their job. It's the prosecution who failed!”
In world news -- the scandal-ridden U.K. tabloid News of the World is closing down its presses for good. The tabloid is under scrutiny for its phone-hacking allegations, but ABC News reports the scandal only adds to its long history of poor judgment.
REPORTER: “Rupert Murdoch can't run away from the reality that his global empire has been exposed to things so raw, so deep, so shocking, despite its 168-year history he is shutting it down for good.”
OBORNE: “It is clear that ‘News of the World’ as owned and managed by Rupert Murdoch was a criminal organization.”
REPORTER: “It was hated by celebrities, politicians, even the royals for its relentless pursuit of sensational stories.”
Still in world news -- Syria is condemning the U.S. for sending an ambassador to the central city of Hama. They accuse the ambassador of inciting a riot with his presence. Here’s Al Jazeera.
“Then the government changed its tactic. The Syria president sacked the government of Hama, the heads of security services were replaced, and tanks were deployed at the edges of Hama. Security forces were sent inside the city... The international community was alarmed, and the U.S. demanded Syrian troops withdraw from Hama.”
In sports -- Texas Rangers fan Shannon Stone attempted to catch a ball thrown by a player, before he lost his balance and fell 20 feet -- to his death. HLN reports on the tragedy.
MEADE: “A Texas Ranger fan fell to his death right in front of his young son. How horrible, Carlos.”
DIAZ: “The man was going after a ball tossed into the stands by outfielder Josh Hamilton. His momentum carried him over the railing and an eyewitness had this account.”
WITNESS: “Just as the ball hit his hand it threw him off balance and he went head first and it was not, it looked awful because you knew there was no way that he was going to land on his feet. He disappeared so you couldn't see anything.”
DIAZ: “The man was still conscious when he was put on a stretcher. He asked paramedics to look after his son saying he is up in the stands all by himself. The man died at the hospital an hour later.”
