MICHAEL HOLMES:
"Basically - a rant about Muslims and their growing presence in Europe and calling, essentially, for a European civil war to overthrow those governments that support multiculturalism.”
The battle over the deficit and debt ceiling reaches fever pitch as the White House’s suggested July 22nd deadline slips by with no deal.
If no deal is reached by the Treasury’s deadline -- August 2nd -- the United States could potentially default on its debt -- although some Congressional leaders dispute that.
But NBC’s Savannah Guthrie says to a panel on MSNBC’s Morning Joe -- enough political chicken already.
SAVANNAH GUTHRIE:
“Come on people, get it together. Everybody knows it’s mutually-assured destruction if the debt ceiling isn’t raised on August 2nd. Even if we don’t default
...economists would say it would have the affect of a default. ... I don’t understand the politics of it. I don’t understand who thinks this is beneficial to them.”
In business news--Research in Motion, maker of BlackBerry, is laying off 2,000 employees - about 10 percent of its workforce.
The Wall Street Journal reports RIM has been quote- “losing ground” to rivals, and the company’s projected profits for the fiscal year are well below earlier forecasts.
In sports news -- the NFL lockout is expected to end Monday.
Players and owners have reportedly worked out a deal everyone can agree on -- all it needs is some signatures.
An anchor for San Diego’s KNSD can barely believe it.
“The NFL has reached a deal? Is that right? Jason is doing this. Okay, for all of you football fans out there - yes, the NFL lockout is over. Apparently the players' executive committee met with the lawyers, they worked through the weekend on issues that are holding up a labor agreement with the owners. Saints quarterback Drew Brees hinted in his e-mail this morning and overnight to teammates that full free agency could open up as soon as tomorrow.”
