In U.S. news — one day left until the New Hampshire primary and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney still holds a commanding lead of the GOP presidential hopeful pack. CNN has the numbers, from two polls. Take a look.
“Let’s take a look at the Suffolk University poll. It shows Mitt Romney with a pretty comfortable lead, but it’s been dropping, for the fourth day in a row. Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman have been gaining a little, a little. And then there’s this American Research Group poll, which shows Mitt Romney ahead by 23 points.”
In world news — Iran has sentenced an Iranian-American man to death. Fox News reports-- the Iranian government claims he is a spy for the CIA.
“28-year-old Amir Mirza Hekmati, who also holds Iranian citizenship, was arrested in December. He was shown on Iranian television saying he was a CIA operative, sent to infiltrate the Iranian intelligence ministry. Under Iranian law, he has 20 days to appeal.”
Still in world news — union workers in Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, are on strike after the government stopped the country’s fuel subsidies. The move almost doubles fuel prices there.
euronews reports - the strikes have reportedly caused the death of at least one person and could possibly disrupt oil exports.
“Subsidies allowed Nigerians to buy a litre of petrol for 31 euro cents until they were axed on January 1. The government says the policy cost more than six billion euros last year.”
In tech news — after a rough year in the U.S., Netflix has now launched its streaming service in the U.K. and Ireland. The BBC tells CEO Reed Hastings the company faces strong competition.
“We’ve already got a company that does that here, LoveFilm. They’ve been on the phone this morning, because they know you were coming on, and they’re saying ‘We’ve got 2 million subscribers already and we’re doing it cheaper.’ How are you going to compete with them?”
Hastings: “Our streaming is on more platforms … We have more content, like with Top Gear, we have thirteen seasons, they only have three...”
