This is newsy now and here are the headlines you need to know.

In U.S. news, a Mississippi judge has blocked the pardons of 21 prisoners. The pardons were issued by Governor Haley Barbour on his way out of office. On CNN a legal analyst explains the strange provision the judge says wasn’t followed.

“The pardon can only go into effect if the person applying for the pardon has published in a local newspaper the 30 or more days before the pardon goes into effect a notice that he's seeking a pardon. Well, the attorney general went into court and said, we don't know whether this notice provision, whether these advertisements have actually been published.”

And in science news, astronomers say they think they have an estimate for how many planets are in our galaxy. The baseline is set at cool 100 billion. The Wall Street Journal ponders the next question- what are the odds of life?

“In that context, then you have to say something is out there. Would it be a life form that resembles the carbon chemistry that we depend on? Maybe not. Would it be something that we’d even be able to recognize as a life form?”

Back in the U.S., an Alabama judge has been asked to declare Natalee Holloway officially deceased. This comes one day after the prime suspect in her disappearance pleaded guilty to another woman’s murder. HLN explains who asked for the ruling.

“Today in Alabama, a judge could declare Natalee Holloway dead. Her father asked for the hearing. Holloway disappeared in Aruba in 2005 while on a class trip. Her father's lawyer says that this is normal procedure. Her mom has not commented.”

And finally in world news, a U.S. aircraft carrier- the USS Carl Vinson -- is now in the Arabian sea. Fox News runs through the situation.

“The pentagon says another group of ships is on its way. Officials say there's no connection between the fleet movement and threats from Iran but the arrival of the USS Carl Vinson comes on the heels of Iranian military exercises in the Persian gulf and threats to block the Strait of Hormuz.”
