In U.S. news, President Barack Obama urged his wealthy supporters to donate Democratic ‘super’ political action committees, or super PACs. In 2009, Obama criticized the Supreme Court decision that allows super PACs to spend unlimited amount of money on political campaigns. KPIX explains what’s changed.
“A recent report shows Republican super PACs are bringing in nearly five times more money than Democratic ones. President Obama’s campaign is defending its decision -- saying the stakes are just too high to play by two different sets of rules.”
A blockbuster merger will create what reports call “a commodities powerhouse,” spanning agriculture, mining and trading. Trader Glencore is set to buy mining company Xstrata in a $90 billion deal.
But CNBC reports some of Xstrata’s biggest shareholders are skeptical, saying...
“...they don’t like the deal. If they’re going to be bought out, they think they could get a much better premium than what they’re getting off Glencore. So, expect that to occupy some minds in investors over the next few days.”
The California Court of Appeals is expected to rule on the state’s same-sex marriage ban today. In 2008, Proposition 8 technically made same-sex marriage illegal in California.
CNN’s senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin says the tide should turn today...
“Based on the way the judges reacted last year when the case was argued, I think a lot of people -- including me -- expect that they will overturn Proposition 8 and reinstate same-sex marriage in California.”
