In U.S. News, former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky unexpectedly waives his pretrial hearing. The move prevents him from hearing any of his accusers speak in court, and also prevents the media from being able to report on their testimony. MSNBC has Sandusky’s lawyer, Joe Amendola, on the move.
“The better part of a tactical maneuver would to be waive today's proceeding being very well prepared and realizing we have much of the evidence we would have gained from today's proceeding without proceeding with it and putting everyone to the task of sitting in court for an entire day's worth of court hearings.”
In world news, Scientists say they are getting closer to finding the Higgs Boson Particle. According to Fox News...
Scientists say they have found tantalizing hints of what they call “the brick that built the universe.” They stopped short of saying they found it, but said they are very excited for the next few months of discovery.
In Belgium-- a gunman opens fire in central Leige, killing four people-- including himself-- and wounding about 75 others. BBC talked with an a Belgian journalist who was at the scene of the attack.
Greg Lenco: “We saw four explosions from grenades and a shooter was on the roof in Saint Lambert Square and he shoot, shooted people with grenades. So now we know the shooter killed himself with a grenade.”
And in Syria-- the government crackdown continues.
The Associated Press reports security forces fired on a funeral procession Tuesday-- killing two and bringing the day’s death toll to 28.
Meanwhile-- the United Nations human rights chief tells the UN Security Council-- Syrian forces have killed more than 5,000 people since the unrest began.
Navi Pillay: “I reported situations of torture, in the detention centers just huge numbers, displaced persons... It was all taken very seriously by the members of the Security Council and every one of them said that this level of violence has to stop.” (Al Jazeera)
Syria’s UN ambassador denies report from the human rights chief. So far-- Syria has refused to let human rights officials into the country.
