In world news -- the London riots have spread across the city. Prime Minister David Cameron has called an emergency session of Parliament. ITN News caught the statements from Police Commissioner Tim Godwin -- warning all acts of criminality will be prosecuted.
“The sheer scale and scope of it means that we’re already more than doubling the number of police officers out there. We’ve got the full support of the government in getting as much mutual aide as necessary... We will be out there in ever greater numbers tonight but more importantly -- we have your images we are asking Londoners to identify you and we will be coming to arrest you.”
The media is seeking more information about Mark Duggan -- the man whose death sparked the first riots. The Jerusalem Post reports a 26-year-old who was shot in his car became the first casualty of the riots.
Still in world news -- Syria continues its military raids, despite warnings from the UN, the Arab League and its neighbors to cease its campaign of violence. CNN has the latest.
“Despite all of this international condemnation and what we're hearing from some Arab leaders as well on Sunday morning, troops entered the eastern city, residents reporting as we have been hearing indiscriminate tank shelling, arrests appearing to happen at random, snipers being station on rooftops, people being prevented from accessing hospitals. In Hama, the city we have been talking about for over a week now, the siege there continues.”
In U.S. news -- the bulls returned to the financial markets during Tuesday’s open -- one day after the a 634 point drop in the Dow. Investors lost more than $1 trillion collectively. ABC News reports on the opening bell and where it will head today.
GEORGE: “Everyone is bracing again for a rough day after that bloodbath yesterday...It was the worst day since the depths of the financial crisis in December 2008... Here the futures have been all over the map, dow futures all over the map. Right now in slightly positive territory.
ROBIN: “Slightly good news in hearing that, george, but the president speaking to the nation about the downgrade on our credit as a dow was in free fall but the market just kept dropping on Monday.”
Still in the U.S. -- Texas Governor Rick Perry will make his 2012 intentions clear on Saturday. The panel on Morning Joe weighs in on his timing -- and chances.
REPORTER: "He's giving a speech in south Carolina on Saturday. Coincidentally the same day as the Iowa straw poll. That's a good way for him to steal a lot of the media attention."
SCARBOROUGH: “What do you think of Rick Perry?’
GEIST: “I think he's got a good message to sell. He's created jobs in Texas. And I think Republican party’s looking for somebody. So it will be an interesting addition.”
SCARBOROUGH: “Well, he's somebody.”
Finally in entertainment -- singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw was hospitalized after being assaulted Sunday night. HLN explains what happened.
“Listen. Singer Gavin DeGraw is recovering from an attack in New York City. According to People Magazine and The New York Post," police are saying that the 34-year-old had a broken nose and cuts after a group beat him up yesterday morning. And then as he was trying to get away, he was hit by a taxi, reportedly. But he was not seriously injured.”
