In world news-- Rebel forces say they’re on the verge of victory in the Libyan capital Tripoli.
Officials say they aren’t sure about the location of Col. Muammar Gaddafi.
And Al Jazeera has an address from a senior member of the rebels’ National Transitional Council, who says-- moving forward, civility is paramount.
MAHMOUD JIBRIL, NATIONAL TRANSITIONAL COUNCIL: “I call on your conscience, responsibility, to come to the fore and prevent you taking any vengeance in these happy moments or damaging property or mistreating foreigners or prisoners. We need to find out why we were mistreated in the past 42 years, and this can only happen if there is a genuine chance for every prisoner to be held accountable in a just trial.”
Also in world news-- Iranian officials have confirmed eight-year prison sentences for two U.S. hikers. The charge? Spying.
Joshua Fattal and Shane Bauer were captured along the Iraq-Iran border in 2009. They say it was a case of wrong place--wrong time.
Here’s HLN on where they’ll be imprisoned.
RYAN SMITH, HLN: “One of the most notorious prisons in Iran. Sarah Shourd says they have been abused many times in that prison. They live in a jail cell where they spend almost all day in there. No light. Get out for about an hour a day. They say on two occasions they were led by police or jail officials to a mysterious location and guns were cocked against them, so they had to beg for their lives. That’s the kind of situation they’re living in in Iran.”
The case against former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn -- is probably going to be dropped.
Analysts point to questions over his alleged victim’s credibility as a major obstacle in moving the case forward.
Her attorney-- isn’t done yet. Here’s CNN.
SUSAN CANDIOTTI, CNN: “He is asking the court to take the DA off the case and appoint a special prosecutor to take over. Her lawyer tells CNN, it’s the prosecutor, not his client, who’s damaged her ability to get a fair trial. But in the end, analysts say, there were too many credibility issues to be able to convince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt.”
In sports-- NASCAR’s Kyle Busch clocks his fourth Sprint Cup win of the season.
Analysts say his performance at the Michigan International Speedway solidifies his position-- as top dog.
Here’s Detroit’s WJBK on the win.
ANCHOR, WJBK: “Thirteen laps to go, Jimmie Johnson in front, not for long, Kyle Busch moving in from the inside, and he was out front. Now a late caution set up a green-white checkered finish. Last week at Watkins Glen, didn’t work out for Busch, yesterday held on, crossed the line first, winning for the fourth time this year, clinches him a spot in the chase. Jimmie Johnson finished second.”
In business news-- fear of a second U.S. recession has driven gold prices to record highs for the third consecutive week.
But Fox’s Stuart Varney says -- economic woes aren’t the only reason.
STUART VARNEY, FOX BUSINESS: “Gold is up 31 dollars an ounce as we speak. It’s now at $1,882, closing in on $1900 an ounce. Just in the month of August, gold has gone up $300 an ounce, and it’s partly because of Libya.”
