In U.S. News -- Republicans hold their Senate majority in the Wisconsin recall election. On MSNBC Joe Scarborough explains the vote couldn’t have come in a worse time for Democrats.
“But, also, the timing could not have been worse. For Democrats with the Dow collapsing, with President Obama suffering some of his lowest ratings. The guaranteed independent in Wisconsin across America saying wait, ‘I'm going to throw people out because they want a cut?’ Again, forget about whether it was a right decided on what they did -- the timing was good for [Scott] Walker.”
Still in the U.S. -- polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs begins a sentence of life in prison plus 20 years after jurors found him guilty of sexual assault of young women. Warren’s niece told her story exclusively to ABC after the trial.
JERUSHA JEFFS: “...he just said, you know, you're a special girl and that he'll help me go to heaven...”
REPORTER: “She kept the rape to herself. Jeffs, whose 10,000 followers believe speaks for god was never charged”
JERUSHA JEFFS: “You didn't disobey warren. Nothing that he did was ever wrong. Ever.”
In world news -- British Prime Minister David Cameron warns rioters of the costs of their actions -- instituting martial law.
“Let me be clear, at cobra this morning, we agreed full contingency planning is going ahead. The police are already authorized to use battering rams and we agreed at cobra that while they're not currently needed, we now have in place contingency plans for water canyon to be available at 24 hours notice.” (Fox News)
To South Korea -- where military officials fire artillery off Yeonpyeong after reportedly hearing shell fire from the North. Euronews explains the conflict near the border.
“The North Korean artillery was the result of an apparent training exercise near the tense maritime border. Three shells reportedly landed near the disputed Northern Limit Line. Last November Yeonpyeong island was attacked by the North, and four people were killed. South Korea responded by sending more troops and vowing to retaliate more forcefully in future.”
Finally in tech news -- Wal-Mart’s streaming video service Vudu wants a bite out of the iPad’s popularity -- but it doesn’t want to split the profits with Apple.
The mega-store decided to launch Vudu on the number-one selling tablet without an app. According GigaOM, “By moving to the mobile web, Vudu can control the customer account across multiple devices, without having to worry about integrating with Apple’s login system... doing so lets Vudu... avoid sharing revenues with Apple.” The streaming service has obtained more than 20,000 titles after being acquired by Wal-Mart last year.
