How much of our lifestyle is supported by forced labor? A new website aims to answer that question. The New York Times explains.

“A nonprofit group … will unveil the new site, www.slaveryfootprint.org, on Thursday in an effort to show that forced laborers are tied to all kinds of everyday products, from electronics and jewelry to the shirt on your back.”

And Fair Trade Fund, the non-profit behind the site, isn’t the only one appealing to your conscience. According to HLN the U.S. government is getting in on the act as well.

“This is being put together by a human rights group but also with money from the State Department. So the government thinks it’s important too, that you know about this.”

So how does the site determine your slavery impact? According to CNN it’s through a simple but rather personal survey.

“The survey asks users 11 lifestyle questions. These include: Where do you live? What's in your medicine cabinet? What's in your closet? What gadgets do you own? How much jewelry do you own? Also, have you ever paid for sex?”

Once the survey is complete, the site estimates how many slaves make products you use.According to Fast Company, Fair Trade Fund’s chief executive Justin Dillon thinks your results may surprise you. He says:

“‘The issue seems far away but the truth is you can't leave your home in the morning without touching something that was made with slavery…’”

So how does Dillon’s group plan to fix the problem? According to the Huffington Post it’s not by going after the corporations involved in human slavery.

“...Dillon isn't interested in vilifying companies that turn a blind eye to forced labor. Rather, he hopes to enlighten consumers and encourage them to tell the brands they love to be upfront about the ways they intend to fight slavery practices.”

As of 2 p.m. slaveryfootprint.org had crashed due to overwhelming traffic and showed this image.
