A single, bloody handprint. That was the only clue left behind after a Maryland woman, Robyn Gardner, went missing. Now, officials found another piece of the puzzle -- an insurance policy. And, it’s more money than you can count on that one hand. WCPO reports:
“ABC news has exclusively learned her traveling companion, Gary Giordano, purchased a $1.5 million accidental death policy, which names himself as the beneficiary.”
Brad Garrett: “This potentially gives them a motive that if he in fact, has taken out life insurance on her than he obviously has perhaps killed her. The combination clearly would fall into the category of premeditation.”
According to MSNBC, insurance policies normally cover occurrences such as flight delays and the airfare. But, Giordano purchased a more pricier premium with accidental death and hospitalization coverage.
Monday, a judge ordered Giordano detained for 16 more days while police conduct their investigation. That could be extended to 60 days, but MSNBC explains how he could soon be a free man:
“Giordano’s attorney has consistently said his client is not guilty, is cooperating with authorities, and should be released.”
LISA PULITZER: “If Giordano gets out and is released to the United States, that’s going to make it much more difficult for prosecutors in Aruba to bring him back to charge him with a crime if, in fact, new evidence comes to light.”
Without a body, the prosecution may be able to use so-called “suspicious acts” from Giordano to extend his detainment. Giordano tried escaping the island after the disappearance, claiming Gardner was “taking another flight.” NBC reported that officials had difficulty identifying him in surveillance footage because he frequently changed his toupees.
Court documents show Giordano has a history of domestic violence allegations. Several women have stepped forward to share their shady encounters with him, including a Maryland woman and her daughter. The Daily Mail says:
“[Giordano] wanted to take her 18-year-old daughter...to Aruba for a photo shoot. 'He started telling me stuff like that he would protect her. He said, "It's not going to be another Natalee Holloway or anything."' Suspicious about the offer, she refused, and Mr Giordano became frustrated.”
