It’s hard to be mayor when you’re not allowed in City Hall. It’s an issue recently elected Daniel Salinas of Sunland, New Mexico is now facing.

KPNX has more on why the mayor pro tem can’t even go on city property.

“Daniel Salinas is accused of videotaping his political rival receiving a lap dance near the Texas-Mexico border. Salinas is now facing an extortion charge.”

KTTV reports the video involved Salina’s opponent — Gerardo Hernandez — getting a lap dance from a topless woman.

“Officials aren’t sure how he’s going to carry out his duties if he’s blocked from even entering city hall and from having any contact with any city employees.”

So if he can’t carry out his duties, surely he can’t be mayor, right? Wrong. Las Cruces Sun-News explains...

“Salinas is still capable of holding office, in spite of the four felony allegations against him... An eventual conviction, should it occur, would require his removal.”

The LA Times reports Hernandez says he didn’t know the dance was recorded...that is, “until a stranger -- armed with a still image from the video -- threatened to release it if he didn’t drop out.”

But Hernandez didn’t drop out — and voters took to the polls Tuesday. Salinas won — and The Chicago Tribune notes...

“So goes politics in the community on the border with Mexico, which is also being audited by the state. If signs of embezzlement are found, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez has indicated that the state is prepared to take over the city’s finances.”
