If you watched SportsCenter Wednesday night, you would have gotten a healthy dose of Penn State news, but you would have completely missed this story: Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos -- kidnapped from his Venezuelan home. MLB.com has more.

“What appears to have happened is four gunmen have taken him. There aren’t really many details after that. It’s a very fresh situation, it’s a delicate matter, it's obviously very serious. Unfortunately this is one of those things that sometimes happens in Venezuela to major league players.”

Venezuela has the highest rate of kidnapping in the world. But an anchor for WZVN explains why this case is so unique.

“Venezuela by the way home to dozens of major league players and the families of wealthy athletes are often targeted by kidnappers hoping to secure a large ransom. This appears though to be the first instance of a player himself being kidnapped.”

With three player-related kidnappings in the last four years, a longtime official in the Venezuelan winter league tells a writer for the Washington Post-- the future of the league could be in doubt.

“It’s going to be tougher now, even for American players... It’s going to be not good for the pastime here. It’s going to be real, real hard to come back with confidence and play baseball.”

So why do the players continue to live in Venezuela? A writer for Baseball Prospectus notes-- it’s difficult to stay away from home, no matter the circumstances.

“It's easy for us to say that they are rich baseball players and that they should live permanently in the United States under relative safety. It's easy for us because we are not from there.”

The kidnapping comes a month after Ramos expressed concern about Venezuelan fans who get drunk and abusive.
