Help-wanted -- but you must be willing to travel.
Fox News reports - NASA is now hiring.
“Officials in Houston say they're looking for astronauts. They have published this listing on a government jobs web site. Apparently some veteran space walkers are leaving the agency. And NASA needs new recruits.”
What’s new for this recruitment is that NASA specially produced a promotional video to attract applications with flashy visuals and dynamic music.
“We’re going to send human beings farther than before, eventually to Mars. With new spacecrafts and rockets, that will take us wherever we want to go. We need you to help plan for the future exploration.”
But MSNBC asks -- New spacecrafts? Do you have them, NASA?
“The only problems here—NASA does not own a spaceship for those astronauts any more.”
And, as the Associated Press notes, NASA’s sending fewer astronauts into orbit of late. So what can the new astronauts expect? The Register explains.
“The new astronauts will train up for stints on the International Space Station… but there might also be opportunities to get a place on future deep space missions if you're willing to wait at least into the 2020s.”
Even though the matched facilities might be lacking, NASA isn’t loosening its recruitment standards. The Telegraph has the details.
“For a job pays between $64,700 and $141,700 a year, applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree - most astronauts have a master's or a doctorate - in engineering, biological science, physical science or mathematics. As well as being prepared for long distance travel they need to be American, but must speak Russian fluently.”
Now NASA is accepting applications from U.S. citizens through January 27, 2012. Only 9 to 15 astronauts will be chosen to take part in the 2013 astronauts candidate training class.
