Two Democrats are under fire after publicly wondering about a dead Sarah Palin. One has since resigned- the other is still in the running for a New Hampshire state House seat.

But both are wishing they had held their fingers and not responded to what turned out to be a fateful Facebook thread.

It all started when a New Hampshire Republican posted a biography of Ted Stevens on his Facebook page. According to Now!Hampshire, that’s when state House-hopeful Keith Halloran posted this--

“Just wish Sarah and [Levi Johnston] were on board.”

And according to CNN’s political ticker, it didn’t stop there. Then-New Hampshire State Representative Tim Horrigan chimed in as well, saying...

"Well a dead Palin wd be even more dangerous than a live one... she is all about her myth & if she was dead she cldn't commit any more gaffes.”

Boston NBC affiliate WHDH reports both men later apologized, and Horrigan ultimately stepped down. But he still tried to explain himself.

“The whole Sarah Palin phenomenon just frustrated me. She’s no more qualified to be President than I am frankly, but people idolize her.”

New Hampshire Republicans were outraged, but no more-so than some conservative media outlets. Dave Poff of Red State writes:

“I won’t even bother pointing out the level of howls and screams we’d be subjected to in the news cycle were these insensitive fools to be Politicians with an “R” after their name.”

Fox News couldn’t agree more. Fox and Friends anchor Steve Doocy talked with a member of the Media Research Center about the lack of mainstream media coverage.

STEVE DOOCY: “Had a Republican said something like that, talking about a dead Democrat, this would be a three week special over on one cable network I can think of.”
NATHAN BURCHFIEL: “There’s media silence on it. It’s unfortunately par for the course but it’s the way the media have covered Sarah Palin since the very beginning.”

But CNN’s Rick Sanchez wasn’t silent on the story. He says in this case, it’s time to defend Sarah Palin.

“It is not funny. It is not right and it certainly isn’t civil.”

“Look politics is important, it’s the lifeblood of our democracy. But it is not nor should it be a partisan bloodsport.”

But some media members weren’t as much outraged, as they were tickled. Houston NBC affiliate KPRC’s anchors thought the situation was so ridiculous, it was funny.

OWEN CONFLENTI: “Horrigan said he believes his words were misconstrued. (Laughter) Sorry.”

LISA BALDWIN: “I’m speechless.”
CONFLENTI: “You can’t say that stuff on Facebook.”
BALDWIN: “I mean there’s record of it.”
CONFLENTI: “When are they going to learn?”

As of Friday, Halloran has not stepped out of the running for New Hampshire House. But what do you think?
