A massive explosion at an Iranian military base has left 17 people dead and 24 others wounded. Euronews has the details.

“The blast occurred as weapons were being moved at the depot just outside of capital of Tehran. Windows in nearby buildings were shattered and the sound of the explosion was heard 25 kilometers away. Authorities say there are no suspicious circumstances over the cause which they’ve described as accidental.”

AFP reports Iranian officials say the blast occurred when soldiers were moving ammunition in the base. The Daily Beast notes the explosion claimed some important personel.

“Among the dead was Commander Hassan Tehrani Moqadam, a specialist in long-range missile research.”

The base is home to some of Iran’s Shahab 3 ballistic missiles and the incident occurred just days after Israel publicly debated a preemptive strike against Iran’s nuclear and missile facilities. This lead a writer for Eurasia Review to suspect sabotage.

“…an Israeli source with extensive senior political and military experience provides an exclusive report that it was the work of the Mossad in collaboration with the MEK. It is widely known within intelligence circles that the Israelis use the MEK for varied acts of espionage and terror … In the murky world of Israel-Iran relations, where it’s often hard to tell the difference between information, misinformation and disinformation, either explanation may be true.”

But Israel’s Ynetnews quotes an Iranian solider who says that’s not possible.

“Hamed Ebrahimi, who served at the base for two months, told the Iranian online daily Rooz that the tough security at the facility makes it highly unlikely that the blast was caused by an act of external interference. …The soldier said that the base is split into two divisions; one stores missiles, while the other serves as an air force training center.”

And BBC adds -- unexplained explosions have happened in Iran before.

“Eighteen people were killed in a blast at a Revolutionary Guards base in the north-western Lorestan province in October 2010.”
