Rupert Murdoch’s company has agreed to a hefty settlement with the family of a victim in the News of the World phone-hacking scandal. KRIV has more.

“Rupert Murdoch's company will pay $3.2 Million dollars to the family of a murdered school girl whose phone was hacked by the News of the World tabloid. News International and the family of Millie Dowler confirmed the settlement today.”

And 3.2 million dollars isn’t the only compensation Murdoch will be coughing up. He has also agreed to a 1 million pound, or 1.6 million dollar, charitable donation in the Dowler family’s name. According to Sky News...

Mr. Murdoch will also personally give £1m to six charities which have been selected by the Dowlers.”

Commenting on the settlement Friday, Murdoch added a personal apology on his company’s behalf. CNN has it.

"The behaviour that the News of the World exhibited towards the Dowlers was abhorrent and I hope this donation underscores my regret for the company's role in this awful event.”

But the pricey payout and personal apology may not have Murdoch out of the woods just yet. According to writers at Gawker he’s still got one group left to appease -- his shareholders.

“The timing of the announcement couldn't be better, coming as it does on the day of News Corp's annual shareholder meeting … Now they can ask why shareholders are paying out millions to mop up after the criminal enterprise overseen by Rupert Murdoch's incompetent son.”

And according to the New York Times, despite steady stock prices, questioning Mr. Murdoch is exactly what the shareholders plan to do.

“Although the hacking scandal and the shuttering of the News of the World has not had a significant impact on the company’s share price, investors are expected to press Mr. Murdoch about corporate governance at News International.”
