So -- in TV land -- there’s this thing called the “seven-second delay.” It can be used to prevent certain things from making air. Too bad for MSNBC contributor and top Time Magazine editor Mark Halperin -- it didn’t come through in time to erase this:
HALPERIN: “I thought he was kind of a dick yesterday.”
SCARBOROUGH: “Delay that. Delay that. What are you doing?”
Halperin -- appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Thursday morning was referring to President Obama’s press conference Wednesday -- in which he admonished Republicans AND Democrats for their inaction on the debt ceiling.
But it seems -- the show’s new executive producer -- didn’t exactly know how to use the seven-second delay button --
PRODUCER: “There’s this one button over here. You’d think this was it. Well apparently there’s this other button over here.”
MIKA: “Okay Alex, you’re supposed to know how to do the job before you actually get the job.”
PRODUCER: “There’s a lot of buttons over here.”
So the un-delayed slip -- went viral -- and -- let’s just say you won’t be seeing Halperin on MNSBC for a while.
“Mark Halperin’s comments this morning were completely inappropriate and unacceptable, we apologize to the president, the White House and all of our viewers, we strive for a high level of discourse and comments like these have no place on our air, therefore Mark will be suspended indefinitely from his role as an analyst.”
For his part -- Halperin released a statement saying he agrees with MSNBC’s decision -- and offers a “heartfelt apology” to the president and the viewers. A snarky firedoglake blogger implies Halperin’s comments about the president -- despite his apology -- were immature.
“Can grownup journalism survive if senior political analysts are not allowed to behave like unpromising adolescents and resort to naughty potty talk while pretending to cover important national issues?”
But RedState’s Moe Lane says -- sure the language was offensive -- especially when talking about the occupant of highest office in the country -- but offers this defense:
“Truth is a defense for slander. The President was, in fact, a d*ck yesterday.”
Was he? You decide. Here he is telling Congress -- they might have to forgo recess if they don’t reach a deal on the debt ceiling by the end of the week.
OBAMA: “They’re saying Obama’s gotta step in. You need to be here. I’ve been here. I’ve been doing Afghanistan. And bin Laden. And the Greek crisis. You stay here. Let’s get it done.”
A little context here on Halperin’s suspension - he’s definitely not the first high-profile suspension from the network -- as Huffington Post explains.
“Most famously, the network suspended Keith Olbermann for undisclosed donations to Democratic candidates in the 2010 election. It also suspended Joe Scarborough for making undisclosed donations and, most recently, yanked host Ed Schultz for a week for calling radio host Laura Ingraham a ‘slut.’”
