I “mustache” you a question. Would you go under the knife to obtain a perfect mustache? Well, increasing numbers of Middle Eastern men have been doing just that.  According to the Times of Israel, many Middle Eastern men go through with the surgery to look quote “professional and wise” and are paying thousands of dollars to follow the trend.

“The procedure costs about $7,000, according to a Paris-based surgeon, who said he has performed increasing numbers of mustache implants over the past five years....

….Most of his clients are between 30 and 50 and often want to imitate the look of celebrities, like the Turkish singer pictured here.

But it’s not all about imitating the celebrities. The Daily Mail reports, mustaches are a serious form of expression in the Middle East, claiming they are symbols of masculine virility, wisdom and maturity.

“Moustaches are also known to symbolize personal honor in the Arab world, with several reported cases of people removing their opponent’s mustaches to disgrace them.”

So facial hair is serious business in the Middle East. The procedure performed by surgeons is called follicular unit extraction, and it seems to be a... hairy process.

“Groups of hairs are taken from areas of dense hair growth to be implanted in the mustache area. Patients were able to fly home the day after they had the procedure. They are able to wash the next day, had to abstain from shaving for 15 days, and could expect to see full results after six months.”

A writer for Jezebel claims, if men are willing to drop thousands of dollars for mustache implants, they have easily become the quote “boobs of the face” for Middle Eastern men. We’ll see if the trend spreads to the United States.
