What could cause a mother to kill her newborn twins? That’s the question on people’s minds as Lindsey Lowe’s case develops. Fox News explains...
“She is 25-year-old Lindsey Lowe and police in a suburb outside of Nashville say that according to what they can find out -- her dad found a baby’s body in a laundry basket. ... Police say she delivered in the toilet. One of the children was born alive, she smothered it -- the next child born alive, she smothered it.”
Lowe has been charged with two counts of first degree murder. Lowe’s father found one infant’s body two days later and called the police. WTVF reports -- she was scared of her parents discovering her pregnancy.
REPORTER: “The affidavit states Lowe knew she was pregnant but never went to the doctor. She kept it a secret from friends and family.”
SCOTT RYAN, HENDERSONVILLE POLICE: “It’s my understanding at this point, the information we have is that no one knew that she was pregnant.”
Police say if she didn’t want the babies, or for anyone to know they were hers, she still had other options. A writer for Blogger News explains.
“Why kill them? Tennessee is one of the states that has the law that allows mothers to just drop their unwanted children off at what they call ‘safe haven’ places such as hospitals, police stations or fire stations (as long as someone is there to look after the child) and there would be no questions asked and no charges against them for it as long as the baby is not harmed.”
Lowe’s lawyer is arguing since she’s never been in trouble before, she should be allowed out on bond to wait for the trial. But as far as a legal defense, an analyst on HLN says there’s not much for her attorneys to work with.
“You’re not talking about some cases where you have a 14 or 15 year-old girl who gets pregnant and delivers kids and doesn’t know what to do. You’re talking about a 25 year-old woman who deliberately and knowingly killed these children … ignorance is not a defense to first degree murder, fear is not a defense to first degree murder, and not being educated is not a defense to first degree murder.”
Lowe’s bond hearing is scheduled for Monday. Police are now testing to figure out the twins’ father. She has been engaged since 2008.
