Some things just don't mix. Cats and dogs. Oil and water. Parents – and Facebook.
Ryan and Rodney Belasic have been kicked off their high school football team in Perry County, Tennessee -- all because of a Facebook status update from their mom.
WTVF in Nashville has the story:
“That post came from a mother reportedly upset about two players, her sons' bedroom and how messy it was. It also revealed they only live here a couple of days a week, spending the rest of the time with a family member in Henry County. That launched an entire investigation that found the pair of brothers ineligible to play, and kicked them off the team.”
The players' ineligibility has forced Perry County High School to vacate 3 of its 5 wins on the season. One Larry Brown Sports blogger says the obvious: Be careful -- the almighty Facebook sees it all:
“Unfortunately the [boys'] mother spelled it out about as clearly as she possibly could. Her carelessness created a paper trail of information that otherwise would have more than likely remained a secret -- a harmless one at that. Damn that Facebook.”
Harmless or not, SportsGrid blogger Glenn Davis says everyone can learn a lesson from this debacle:
“...this controversy also seems ripe for just another age-old parent lesson: clean your room, because, well, see what happens if you don’t?”
News of the incident even made it across the pond. One Daily Mail writer speaks for sons and daughters all over the world:
“... yet another reason why parents should be banned from Facebook.”
After vacating three wins, the Perry County football team sits at 2-0 on the season, and still has a chance to make the Tennessee state playoffs.
