After a series of leaks and rumors-- VerizonWireless launched the Motorola Droid 3 Thursday morning amid virtually no fanfare.
The phone, which Verizon is calling “the world’s thinnest full QWERTY smartphone”, bears a striking resemblance to it’s predecessors-- with a few key upgrades. (Image source: GottaBeMobile)
“Much like the original...the Droid 3 features a slide-out, five-row QWERTY keyboard but boasts a larger and better 4-inch qHD ...touch screen. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread-based smartphone also packs a dual-core processor, 16 gigabytes of internal memory, and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture.”
Some reviewers, including ComputerWorld’s J.R. Raphael, are praising the new phone.
“The device has all the makings of a solid starting point for new Android buyers or an attractive option for original Droid owners looking to replace their now-two-year-old phones.”
Other reviewers, including PhoneDog’s Jon Q, aren’t exactly fans.
“Some downfalls of the device would be the 512 megabytes of RAM. Another shortcoming would be the display. Although qHD resolution, remember that magic word, is nice, the Droid 3 uses pentile display technology, meaning that the pixelization is way more obvious.”
One lackluster feature of the new phone has the writers at GottabeMobile thinking shoppers might want to pass this phone up for another forthcoming Droid model.
“Sadly, the Droid 3 looks like it’s going to be a 3G device and not a 4G LTE smartphone barring any major last minute changes. A disappointment to be sure and something that will make the Droid Bionic look a lot more appealing.”
