A train collision in Scott County, Mo., has injured seven people and collapsed a highway overpass. KMOV describes the scene:

“We’re told a Union Pacific train T-boned a Burlington Northern train just a couple of hours ago. Seven people injured here; we’ve been watching as fire crews just left the scene 15 minutes ago.”

KDSK reports the trains struck each other at a track intersection at around 2:30 A.M., just below the Highway M overpass between Scott City and Chaffee. One of the trains collided with a concrete pillar supporting the overpass, which then collapsed and brought down the entire section of highway, along with two cars.

The five occupants of the cars, along with two train operators, were taken to a local hospital. Thankfully, all of the injuries were relatively minor. KFVS spoke a local man who witnessed the rescue of the two train operators.

“The train was on its side, they got the guys out, lifted them off the train and got them up the overpass. One of them was kind of bloody, and the other one looked like he was pretty shook up.”

The overpass collapse is the latest in a string of catastrophic transportation accidents. NBC points out, the crash comes just one week after a commuter train derailment in Connecticut injured more than 70 people, and right on the heels of Friday’s I-5 bridge collapse.

The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team to investigate the cause of this collision. All sections of Highway M from Scott City to Chaffee are now closed in both directions.
