Talk about too little too late -- a Louisiana man, missing for 27 years, has finally been found.
Here’s ABC:
“Joseph W. Schexnider was an Abbeville native and served in the National Guard. But in January 1984 he failed to show up for a court hearing in Abbeville. His family never saw or heard from him again.”
Except he didn’t even leave town. Turns out he was just trying to wiggle his way down the chimney of a bank that had been closed off.
“27 years later, his remains were found by construction workers renovating the bank. DNA testing confirmed those were the bones of Schexnider.”

How could it take so long? CNN tells us.
“One, Schexnider (Sheks-ny-dur) had a history of running away, once even joining a traveling circus… even his family was not actively looking for him.
Two, the chimney opens on to the second floor of the red-brick bank building in Abbeville… and for decades the second floor had been used mainly for storage.”
WKRG says it’s unclear why he climbed down the chimney and the cause of death was most likely dehydration and starvation. The fugitive’s family plans to give him a proper funeral once his remains are returned.
“Hopefully this will give the family some closure. There’s no signs of any foul play in this investigation. As of now, it’s going to be a closed case.”
