Texas A&M sprinted to the SEC. Now, it appears they’ll be entering with a limp. KRIV in Houston as the latest from College Station.
“The help wanted sign is up at Texas A&M. They’re looking for a new head football coach after Mike Sherman got fired yesterday. This comes after four years on the job for Sherm. A 25-25 record. His best season, his only winning season, came last year when the Aggies went 9-4 including the loss in the cotton bowl. This year in the wake of a lot of high expectations, the Aggies went a disappointing 6-6.”
ESPN’s Trevor Matich doesn’t think Sherman had to be fired, but understands the decision.
“It’s sad in some ways because I think in many ways Mike Sherman did a terrific job there, but you’re right the blown leads are hard to swallow…It’s not just one game where this kind of thing happened. It happened over and over again. And at some point that falls at the feet of the head coach.”
But just a few days ago, Sherman’s job was thought to be safe. Yahoo! Sports' Pat Forde tells us there was disagreement behind closed doors.
“A Monday meeting illuminated a split among A&M’s administration about Sherman, with athletic director Bill Byrne in favor of keeping him but meeting resistance from others at the presidential and trustee level. Texas A&M does not appear to be the most unified place on the cusp of its move to the SEC.”
And proving that point, just days ago the Aggies CFO called the school’s president, R. Bowen Loftin, a “putz” and a “hopelessly under qualified puppet.” Ouch. And count CBSSports’ Dennis Dodd among those who don’t think highly of the president.
“…Loftin is an academic making intrusions into a glorious, tradition-bound football program…A president is allowed to change his mind, but this president has his nose poked so far into athletics that, well, you get it.”
And it seems like there isn’t much praise on campus either. According to the Texas A&M student newspaper, The Battalion, the handling of Sherman’s departure was amateurish.
“Mike Sherman’s firing Thursday was nothing short of a fiasco, bungled by a leaky University administration that showed uncharacteristic ineptitude.”
Multiple reports say that Houston coach Kevin Sumlin and Louisville coach Charlie Strong are the leading candidates to replace Sherman.
