Microsoft will stop providing service updates for Windows XP on April 8, leaving XP machines vulnerable to hackers.By Matt Picht | April 6, 2014
The deadline is finally upon us. Two days from now, Microsoft will pull the plug on Windows XP support and let the 12-year-old operating system fade into obscurity.
On April 8, Microsoft will stop providing security updates to XP platforms. The tech company is marking the occasion with this ominous green countdown clock, which warns XP users to "migrate to a current supported operating system."
And it's an important warning to heed — although the OS won't suddenly stop working on April 8, Gizmodo notes a lack of security updates will make XP machines "a giant, pulsating bullseye for hackers."
