TLC’s reality TV mom, Michelle Duggar, has suffered a miscarriage. The ‘19 Kids and Counting’ star discovered the tragic news on Thursday.

Husband Jim Bob made a statement to E!

“Earlier today at a routine doctors appointment Michelle and I received the sad news that we lost the baby. This would have been the couple’s 20th child. The TLC star says his wife is resting comfortably at home and thanks everyone for their support. We are grateful for all ‘the thoughts and prayers’ but asked for privacy during this difficult time.”

When 45-year-old Duggar announced the pregnancy in November on NBC's Today Show, many questioned whether the baby would be safe safe given Duggar’s age.

Dr. Rebecca Brightman says this miscarriage is a medical sign that Mrs. Duggar may not be able to have any more children.

“This should probably indicate something to her about her ability to continue having babies?”

“Well I think it’s something to think about because clearly her pregnancies are at an increased risks, and she wants to be with her kids at home and not put her health at risk because she wants to be there for her other children.”

This is Michelle’s second miscarriage. The couple lost their first baby during Michelle’s second pregnancy-- while she was on birth control. After that, the couple says they decided to leave the question of how many children to have “up to God”.

When the family decided to move into the spotlight with their TLC reality show-- their lifestyle choices brought on criticism from those who believe the family has too many kids.

But regardless of whether you agree with their choices-- one writer for Babble says the family deserves sympathy right now.

“I’ll be the first to say I disagree with them on a lot of issues myself. But before we all start the next round of criticizing and second-guessing, let’s give them credit for holding it together and carrying themselves with dignity when they’d much rather mourn their loss away from media speculation.”

The family plans to name the baby before holding a funeral service.
