Scared of commitment? Well, what if your cell phone contract could last longer than your marriage? MSNBC explains.

“A group of lawmakers in Mexico City is now pushing the idea of a temporary marriage license. The contract would allow couples to decide to continue their relationship after the two year expiration or opt out."

After 24 months -- if you’re still in the honeymoon phase -- the contact extends until death do you part. But if it’s just not working, the couple can go their separate ways, no questions asked.

BBC
reports the bill’s author, Lizbeth Rosas Montero, says half of all Mexico City marriages end in divorce anyway.

“...the contracts, allowing couples to ‘renew or dissolve’ the marital link after a pre-arranged term, would lead to more harmonious relationships and reduce the workload on family judges.”

Montero says the bill would just make divorce less messy, but not everyone in Mexico thinks it’s that simple. ABC has the Mexican archdiocese’s take.

“The reform is absurd. It contradicts the nature of marriage. It’s another one of these electoral theatrics the assembly tends to do that are irresponsible and immoral.”

And CNN reads a little deeper into the bill’s meaning, in the second largest Catholic city in the world.

“A lot of the youth still identify as catholic, they still go to church, they still go to church every Sunday, they wear their rosaries and they still pray, but it’s indicative of the change of mindset there.”

Some supporters of the bill don’t think it’s such a huge change. A radio talk show host explains to Houston’s KRIV.

"It really is no different than a prenuptial agreement that anticipates the potential end of a marriage."

The temporary marriage contract would include instructions on how the couple would handle children and property if they decide to split. But don’t save the date just yet--Lawmakers won’t say “I do” to the bill, until at least sometime in December.
